Sat, May 18, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Men's Tennis Announces Team Award Winners Posted: Friday, May 29, 2009 EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - UW-Eau Claire head men's tennis coach Tom Gillman has announced the team award winners for the 2008-09 season. Phil Loprinzi (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) and Chris Kuna (Fr.-Edina, Minn.) shared player of the year honors. Loprinzi completed the season with a 18-11 overall singles record, including a 17-10 record in dual meets. He finished 13-9 at No. 3 singles and 4-1 in the No. 2 spot. On the doubles side he went 22-10 overall and 21-9 in the No. 1 spot in dual meets. Kuna finished the year with a 20-9 overall and 19-8 dual meet record on the singles side. He went 14-8 at No. 4, 3-0 at No. 3, and 1-0 at No. 2 and No. 5 singles. In doubles competition he went 22-11 overall and 17-11 in dual meets, recording a 17-10 mark in the No. 2 spot and a 0-1 record at No. 1. Most improved player honors was presented to Chris Thornton (So.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham). This year Thornton went 8-4 in singles play and won his last four matches, while he picked up an 8-3 record in doubles competition. Last season he went 8-1 on the singles side and 4-1 in doubles play. Kevin Fawcett (Jr.-Madison, Wis./Verona) won the Blugold Award. He went 10-6 in both singles and doubles this year. The Team Player Award went to Lars Olson (So.-De Pere, Wis.), who finished the season with a 13-17 singles and an 18-12 doubles record, while Eric Wollum (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) earned the Coaches Award. Wollum wrapped up the season with a 13-8 singles and a 14-7 doubles record. The Blugolds ended the season with a 24-10 dual meet record and advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship for only the second time in school history. - KM - |
