Men's Track And Field Qualifies For Four Events Posted: Sunday, May 17, 2009 INDIANAPOLS, Ind. - The UW-Eau Claire men's track and field team has qualified to compete in four events at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship, NCAA officials announced today. The Blugolds will participate in the hammer throw, the 800-meter run, the 4x400-meter relay and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sam Johnson (Sr.-Deer Park, Wis./Amery) will kick off action as he competes in the hammer throw at 1 p.m. (EDT) Thursday. Johnson qualified for the event with a toss of 56.79 meters (186-4) as he won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title earlier this month. Later in the day, the 4x400-meter relay team of Tim Braunschweig (Jr.-Mukwonago, Wis.), Chris Kupfer (Sr.-Germantown, Wis.), Josh Prince (Fr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis.) and Patrick Mackin (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) will participate in the event trials. Finals will take place Saturday at 4:45 p.m. (EDT). The group was selected for the national meet after recording a time of 3:15.09 at the UW-La Crosse Qualifier last Thursday. On Friday at 4:40 p.m. (EDT), Wes Fischer (Jr.-Rosemount, Minn.) will compete in the trials of the 800-meter run. He qualified for the event with a time of 1:51.79 in the UW-Madison Twilight last weekend. Finals will be contested Saturday at 2:50 p.m. (EDT). Chris Wirtz (Jr.-Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday at 5:15 p.m. (EDT). Wirtz was selected to compete in the event after taking first at the UW-La Crosse Qualifier with a school-record time of 9:08.23. Hosted by Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, the three-day championship will begin Thursday (May 21) and will conclude Saturday (May 23). Events will start at noon (EDT) Thursday. - KM - |
