PETER, Minn. - For only the second time in program history, the UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team competed in an NCAA Division III Championship match, but fell in the first round 5-0 to UW-Whitewater at the Brown Outdoor Tennis Complex today. The Blugolds, who are now 1-2 in NCAA postseason play after previously competing in 1996, end this season with a 24-10 record. While it was only the second time the Blugolds advanced to the NCAA postseason, they previously appeared in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament 10 times before joining the NCAA in the mid-90s. Whitewater improves to 22-8 this year and will now face host Gustavus Adolphus College tomorrow in the second round of the championship at 3 p.m. Eau Claire was unable to get anything going today and finished without a victory. Only the doubles competition plus the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were contested completely as the Warhawks had five out of nine wins before the other matches finished. Steve Lantz (Sr.-Rochester, Minn./Century)wrapped up his career as a Blugold today. He finished up his senior season with a 13-16 overall singles record and a 12-15 dual meet record. In doubles play this year he finished with a 22-9 overall and 21-8 dual meet record. Eau Claire-Whitewater Box Score - KM - |
