Posted: Monday, May 4, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team will join 40 other teams in this year's NCAA Division III Championship, the NCAA announced today.
The Blugolds earned an at-large bid to compete in the postseason tournament for only the second time in school history. Prior to this season Eau Claire's only appearance came during the 1995-96 season. The Blugolds went 1-1 after winning in the first round against Coe College (Iowa) but losing in the second round to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.). Before joining the NCAA, however, the Blugolds appeared in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament 10 times and won the NAIA District 14 title nine times.
This year, Eau Claire will compete in a six-team, single-elimination regional Friday-Sunday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
Friday the fifth-seeded Blugolds will face No. 4-seed UW-Whitewater. No. 3-seed Luther College (Iowa) will take on sixth-seeded Concordia University (Wis.). The winner of the Eau Claire-Whitewater match will move on to face No. 1-seed Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday while the winner of the Luther-Concordia match will take on No. 2-seed University of Texas at Tyler. The winners of Saturday's contests will face each other in the third round on Sunday.
Quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds will be played at Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges, May 19-21.
