WHITEWATER, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team came to close to winning the automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, being one of four teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to compete for the chance, but lost to conference rival UW-La Crosse today 5-3 in the first round while then winning against UW-Oshkosh in the second round 8-1 to finish third.

UW-Whitewater won a first round match and then faced La Crosse to determine the conference's automatic qualifier. The Warhawks went on to prevail 7-2 and will now compete in the NCAA Championship.

In the singles competition against La Crosse, Eau Claire won two matches. Megan Born (Fr.-Antigo, Wis.) defeated her opponent at the No.2 spot with scores of 1-6, 6-2 and 6-0 while Michelle Reinders (So.-Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) took the No. 6 spot for the Blugolds with scores of 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2.

In the doubles competition against the Eagles, the Blugolds could only grab one win. The No. 2 doubles team of Brenna McCormick (Jr.-Greendale, Wis.) and Erin Welch (Jr.-Tomah, Wis.) won their match with a score of 8-1.

In the second round singles competition against the Titans, the Blugolds swept the competition. Gina Dahl (Jr.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.) handled the No. 1 spot easily with scores of 6-3 and 6-1 while Born took her second singles competition win on the day at the No. 2 spot with scores of 6-4 and 6-4. McCormick won the No. 3 spot with scores of 6-3 and 6-2 while Welch added a victory at the No. 4 spot with scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Lynne won the No. 5 spot with scores of 6-2 and 6-2 while Reinders won at the No. 6 for her second time in singles on the day with scores of 6-2 and 6-0.

When it came to the doubles competition against Oshkosh, the No. 1 team of Dahl and Lynne notched a 8-3 victory for the Blugolds while the No. 2 team of McCormick and Welch added the last points for the Blugolds with the 8-4 win.

Since the Blugolds did not win the WIAC's automatic bid, they will have to wait until Monday (May 4) to see if they earn an at-large berth. Competition in the 2009 NCAA Championship will begin next weekend.
