EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire softball team is set to compete in the 2009 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by UW-Superior, scheduled for May 1-3 at the Liebaert Complex.

The Blugolds head into the weekend as the No. 4 seed. They will face No. 5 seed UW-River Falls at noon Friday. The winner will move on to compete again at 4 p.m. while the loser will play another game at 2 p.m. in the double-elimination tournament.

The Blugolds enter the tournament with a 27-12 overall record but are currently on a four-game losing streak. The Falcons come in to the weekend on a four-game winning streak and hold a 24-14 overall record.

Earlier this season the Blugolds posted two wins against River Falls, winning 4-3 and 5-3 at home. The Blugolds are 45-28 all-time against the Falcons and have won six out of the last seven contests.

Last year the Blugolds took third at the conference tournament after falling to UW-River Falls, which went on to take second as UW-Oshkosh won the title. The Blugolds then went on to receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Championships where they won eight straight contests to take home the national title.

While last year's conference tournament was a two-day affair, this year the tournament will be contested in three days. Eight teams will play eight games Friday while six teams will remain to compete Saturday. A total of five games will be played Saturday. The championship game will be played Sunday at noon and a second championship game will be played following that game if needed because of the double-elimination format.

The winner of the WIAC Tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships, which are slated to begin May 7. At-large selections and the official bracket will be announced Monday (May 4) beginning at 10 a.m.
