Men, Women Take Third At WIAC Relays

EAU CLAIRE - Both the UW-Eau Claire men and women's swimming and diving teams took third place out of six teams here today at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Relays at the McPhee Physical Education Center.

UW-La Crosse won the event on the women's side, tallying 160 points. UW-Stevens Point finished in second with 140 points and the Blugolds took third with 100 points. UW-Whitewater took fourth with 62, UW-River Falls fifth with 50 and UW-Oshkosh sixth with 46 points.

The Blugold women captured either second or third place in all but two of the swimming events, including second place finishes in two events. The 400-yard medley relay team of Emmie Lee (Fr.-Zimmerman, MN/Elk River), Emily Diehl (Fr.-Prairie du Sac/Sauk Prairie), Alissa Condra (So.-Rhinelander), and Kyle Welke (Fr.-Eau Claire/North) claimed second place in their event with a time of 4:20.88.

The other second place finish on the women's side came from the team of Kara Kneisl (Fr.-Mahtomedi, MN), Cori Severson (Jr.-Brainerd, MN), Amanda Kroger (Fr.-Shoreview, MN/Mounds View), and Annie Gorman (Jr.-Menomonie), who took second in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 8:05.74.

On the men's side of things, Stevens Point came out victors with a team score of 160. La Crosse took second with 124 points and the Blugolds third with 102. Oshkosh and Whitewater tied for fourth place with 72 points while River Falls took sixth with 24 points.

The Blugolds claimed eight top-three finishes on the day, including sweeping the diving portion of the competition. The team of Scott Heatwole (Jr.-Port Washington) and Bryan Dykstra (Fr.-Racine/Horlick) took first in the 1-meter event with a score of 242.30 while also winning the 3-meter event with a score of 268.55. The Eau Claire men took third in six different swimming relays.

Both the men and women swimmers and divers will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Titan Invitational in Oshkosh. The meet is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and resume at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
