Men's Hockey Tops Augsburg For Third Straight Win

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team fought off 14 power play opportunities for visiting Augsburg, scoring a 7-4 victory over the Auggies here tonight at Hobbs Ice Arena.
The win is the third straight for the Blugolds as they move to 4-3-0 on the season. Augsburg falls to 1-3-1 on the season.
Rob Ouimette (Sr.-Iron Bridge, ONT/Leamington District) got the scoring started for the Blugolds, tallying the first two goals of the game. Less than five minutes into the contest, he took a pass from Ben Manny (Sr.-Chippewa Falls/Chi-Hi) and gave the Blugolds a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, he widened the lead to 2-0 on a pass from Kyle Garner (So.-Sun Prairie).
The Auggies made it a one goal game with less than two minutes remaining in the game on a goal by Aaron Johnson but the Blugolds would get the last word in the first period. With just one second remaining in the opening period, Phil Cherneski (Sr.-Thompson, MAN/RDPC) took a pass from Ouimette and gave the Blugolds a 3-1 lead. Dave Coleman (So.-Whitby, ONT/Leo J. Austin) also earned an assist on the goal.
The lone goal of the second period came just 1:28 in, when Chip Dunleavy (Jr.-Littleton, CO/Columbine) scored an unassisted, short-handed goal to give Eau Claire a 4-1 advantage.
Brooks Lockwood (So.-Hudson) and Dunleavy added goals in the third, following the Auggies' second goal of the game. Augsburg tallied two more goals late in the game but Cherneski's second goal of the game finished the scoring a 7-4.
The Blugolds committed 19 penalties for 38 minutes but fought off of all 14 power play tries for the Auggies. Eau Claire was 2-for-11 on power play tries.
Steffan Braunlich (Jr.-Playa del Rey, CA/Loyola) played all 60 minutes in net for the Blugolds, making 30 saves on the night.
The Blugolds are back in action tomorrow night when they host Concordia-Moorhead. Face off is set for 7:05 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Arena.
