Sun, May 19, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Men's Tennis Wins Two More On Spring Break Trip Posted: Tuesday, March 17, 2009 HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team picked up two more victories on the second day of its spring break trip, defeating Hobart College (N.Y.) 9-0 to open the day and Messiah College (Pa.) 7-2 later in the day. Eau Claire improves to 14-5 on the season with the two wins. The Blugolds have now won four in a row. The Blugolds swept competition against Hobart and allowed only five points in doubles play. Lars Olson (So.-De Pere, Wis.) and Chris Kuna (Fr.-Edina, Minn.) picked up an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles while Dirk Van Rybroek (Fr.-Madison, Wis./Edgewood) and Kevin Fawcett (Jr.-Madison, Wis./Verona) won by the same score at No. 3. Steve Lantz (Sr.-Rochester, Minn./Century) and Phil Loprinzi (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) won 8-3 in the No. 1 spot. In single's play, Eric Wollum (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) allowed only two points at No. 5 with scores of 6-0 and 6-2. Fawcett won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 while Loprinzi won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Van Rybroek won 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot. Kuna and Lantz both competed in close matches but eventually came out on top. Lantz won 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 at No. 1 while Kuna won at No. 3 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Against Messiah, the Blugolds fell short in both No. 1 matches. At No. 6 singles, however, David Kelley (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) did not allow a single point as he won 6-0, 6-0. Fawcett and Wollum each allowed only one point at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, as they won 6-0, 6-1. Lars Olson won at No. 2 6-2, 6-2 and Chris Thornton (So.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) picked up a victory at No.5 singles with scores of 6-1 and 7-5. Wollum and Aaron Johnson (So.-Andover, Minn./Elk River) recorded a win for the Blugolds at No. 2 doubles with a score of 8-5 while the No. 3 duo of Mike Olson (So.-Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) and Matt Hambidge (Fr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) secured an 8-2 win. The Blugolds will be back in action for two more contests tomorrow. They will face Rhodes College (Tenn.) at 8 a.m. and will wrap up the day against Denison University (Ohio) at 12:30 p.m. - KM - |
