Posted: Wednesday, March 4, 2009
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - For the second consecutive year, UW-Eau Claire wrestler Josh Holforty (Sr. -Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) will represent the Blugolds at the NCAA Championships, scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Holforty earned an at-large berth at 197 pounds to compete at nationals after finishing third at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships two weeks ago. Last year he also finished third in the conference and went on to compete in the national meet where he earned All-American status with a sixth place finish.
This season Holforty is ranked eighth in NCAA Division III and has an overall record of 29-7. Friday Holforty will face the Luther College's Alec Bonander, who is ranked first in the nation and is the No. 1 seed at this year's meet. Both Bonander and Holforty have earned first-round byes and will face each other in the second round.
Last year the two also met in the second round of the championship and Holforty recorded a 5-2 victory over Bonander. The two met once again in the fifth-place match but Holforty was forced to use a medical forfeit which gave Bonander the fifth place finish while Holforty took sixth. The two have also met earlier this season in November and Bonander defeated Holforty 10-0.
Wrestling will get underway at 6 p.m. Friday night with the second and final day of competition beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
