Women's Track & Field Takes Second At WIAC Championship

MENOMONIE, Wis. - With 144.5 points, the UW-Eau Claire women's track and field team took second place out of nine teams at this year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

Last year the Blugolds also took second but scored 137.83 points. La Crosse won its third straight conference title with a total of 196.5 points. Oshkosh was third with 110.5 and Stevens Point was fourth with 65. Rounding out the top five was River Falls, which scored 49 points in its fifth place finish.

Liz Kooistra (Sr.-Lakeville, Minn.) earned two conference titles on her way to being named the Track Performer of the Meet. She won the 200-meter dash with a facility record 25.38 and also took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.48, almost a second faster than the next finisher. Last year she won the 400-meter dash at conference but finished second in the 200-meter dash.

The Blugolds also captured the conference title in the 4x200-meter relay. The team of Kooistra, Amy Bachinski (Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH), Jordanne Greenup (Fr.-Fridley, Minn.) and Talisa Emberts (Fr.- Sussex, Wis./Sussex-Hamilton) finished the relay with a facility-record time of 1:44.60, almost two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

In the one-mile run, Hannah Humbach (Jr.-Madison, Wis./Abundant Life) took second place with a time of 5:14.25. Mary Palmer (Sr.-Anoka, Minn.), who won the 5,000-meter run yesterday, took second in the 3,000-meter run today with a time of 10:15.21. Palmer was also named to this year's All-Sportsmanship team, which recognizes individuals who display exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.

Two Blugolds finished in the top three in the weight throw. Amy Morse (Sr.-Kaukauna, Wis.), who won the event last year, took second this season with a distance of 15.89 meters (52-1 ?). Brittany Frederick (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis./Preble) was third with a throw of 15.85 meters (52-0).

Maria Peloquin (So.-Prescott, Wis.) was third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.15.

Next Saturday the Blugolds will be in Stevens Point for a last chance meet. Events are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
