Wed, Jun 19, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Swimmers & Divers Wrap Up WIAC Championship Posted: Saturday, February 21, 2009 BROWN DEER, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's swimming and diving team took third place while the men took fourth out of six teams at the 2009 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center, held the last three days. On the women's side, UW-La Crosse earned its second consecutive conference crown, finishing with 970 points. Stevens Point finished second with 808 points and the Blugolds took third with 611, their most points since 2005. A season ago Eau Claire finished with 529.5. Whitewater took fourth this season with 384, Oshkosh was fifth with 241 and River Falls scored 153 to take last place. The Stevens Point men earned the conference title, their 10th straight, with 999.5 points. La Crosse finished second with 751.5 and Whitewater took third with 555.5. Eau Claire scored 483.5 points in their fourth place finish, while Oshkosh took fifth with 244 and River Falls was last with 192. This was the first time since 2000 the Blugolds did not finish third. Angie Bakula (So.-Appleton, Wis./West) set a conference championship meet and school record as she became the conference champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She completed the event in a time of 17:13.52, one of the fastest times in the nation this season and an a-cut qualifying time. Kirsten Lickel (Fr.-Madison, Wis./East) also finished second in the event with a time of 17:35.15. Nicole Dorvinen (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and Megan Finley (So.-Waunakee, Wis.) both earned third place finishes in finals today. Dorvinen took third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.73, but set a school record in preliminaries with a time of 2:08.25. Finley earned a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.66. Alyssa Trainor (So.-Winona, Minn./Cotter) also broke a school record in preliminaries of the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.99. The Blugold men's best finish came on the diving board. Bryan Dykstra (Sr.-Racine, Wis./Horlick) completed the 3-meter dive with a score of 498.45 for a second place finish. Ken Ritt (Jr.-Racine, Wis./Horlick) gained 393.55 points to take fourth. In men's swimming, Matt Schultz (Jr.-Oakdale, Minn./North) had Eau Claire's highest finish, taking third with a time of 1:58.22 in the 200-yard butterfly. Peter Schultz (Sr.-Oakdale, Minn./North) took fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:10.60. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Blugold women took third with a time of 3:32.47 while the men finished fourth with a time of 3:11.16. The Blugolds will now wait to see who is selected to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held March 18-21 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. - KM - |
