Fri, May 24, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Men's Tennis Opens Season In Minnesota Posted: Sunday, February 1, 2009 SARTELL, Minn. - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team kicked off the 2009 season with meets against St. Cloud State University and Concordia-Moorhead at Gold's Gym today. Eau Claire came up short against St. Cloud 7-2 to open the day's events. The Blugolds defeated Concordia 8-1 in their second match. Two Blugolds picked up wins in singles competition against the St. Cloud. Steve Lantz (Sr.-Rochester, Minn./Century) found a victory in the No. 3 spot, defeating Ryan Schoenefeld 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). Aaron Johnson (So.-Andover, Minn./Elk River) also won at No. 5 against Shane Ecklund with scores of 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (10-3). Against Concordia, the Blugolds swept all matches except No. 1 singles. Three Blugolds allowed only three points in two sets in singles competition. Phil Loprinzi (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo), Lantz and Chris Thornton (So.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) all picked up wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6, respectively, by only giving up three points. Chris Kuna (Fr.-Edina, Minn.) and Aaron Johnson (So.-Andover, Minn./Elk River) also picked up singles victories. In doubles competition against the Cobbers, Loprinzi and Lars Olson (So.-De Pere, Wis.) won 8-4 at No. 1. Lantz and Chris Kuna (Fr.-Edina, Minn.) also won at No. 2 by a score of 8-2 while Dirk Van Rybroek (Fr.-Madison, Wis./Edgewood) and Eric Wollum (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) did not allow a point at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-0. Eau Claire will be back in action next weekend with four more meets. Saturday the Blugolds will take on Coe College and Monmouth College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and will be at home on Sunday for meets against Ripon College and St. Mary's University. - KM - |
