Sun, May 19, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Sikora Leads Young Team Into 2004-05 Season Posted: Wednesday, November 10, 2004 EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team returns only four letterwinners from last year's team but look to improve on last year's 13-20 record. The Blugolds will be led by the return of Derek Sikora (Jr.-Neillsville). Sikora became only the second Blugold to finish third at the Division III National Championships by winning six consecutive matches last year to finish 29-6 at 165 pounds. Sikora took first at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships a year ago to become the first Blugold ever to take first at 165 pounds. Tony D'Antuono (Jr.-Waukesha/South), Larry Moen (Sr.-Madison/East) and Dave Vanevenhoven (Jr.-Kaukauna) also return for Eau Claire. Vanevenhoven had a strong sophomore campaign last year improving from 4-14 his freshman year to 19-11 last year at 149 pounds. Vanevenhoven also led the team with eight pins. He advanced to the finals in his weight class last year at the WIAC Championships but fell in the finals to take second. Moen went 15-8 last year while dividing his time between 197 pounds and heavyweight. Moen went 11-6 at 197 pounds and 4-2 at heavyweight. He wrestled at heavyweight at the WIAC Championships taking fifth. D'Antuono split time at 141 pounds last year going 2-10. Freshmen joining this year include Shane Brady (Fr.-Chetek) at 133 pounds, Toby Roach (Fr.-Spring Valley) at 141 or 149 pounds and Ted Sikowski (Fr.-Appleton/West) at 174 or 184 pounds. Brady compiled a three-year record of 99-20 in high school including a 38-4 record his senior year at 119 pounds. Brady was a two-time team MVP and was a two-time qualifier for the WIAA State Wrestling Championships. Roach went 128-21 over four years of high school. Roach took first at 140 pounds at the Division III State Championships his senior year and is a three-time conference champion. Sikowski earned All-Fox Valley Association his senior year and owns the school record with 248 career takedowns. The Blugolds will open up their season this weekend at the St. Olaf Open. The open is scheduled to begin Saturday at 10 a.m.
