Fri, May 24, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Holforty Leads The Way At 2008 Husky Open Posted: Saturday, December 13, 2008 ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Josh Holforty (Sr. -Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), who is ranked eighth in Division III at 197 pounds, led the UW-Eau Claire wrestling team with a first place finish in the 197 pound category at the 2008 Husky Open today hosted by St. Cloud State University and held at the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse. Holforty began the first round with a bye, and later defeated Felton Banks to move on to the quarterfinal round. He pinned Felton in 2:43. From there, Holforty went on to defeat Ted Saatzer of St. Cloud State University and moved on to the semifinal match against Tony Willaert. Willaert, ranked fourth in the nation, lost to Holforty by a 10-2 major decision. In the championship match, Holforty won a 3-1 decision over Pat Mahan of Minnesota State-Mankato to take first place in the 197 pound category. John Schoen (Fr.-Neillsville, Wis.) also competed in the 197 pound category and placed sixth in the weight class. Andy Johnston (Jr.-St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) was the next highest finisher for the Blugolds, taking fourth place in the 149 pound bracket. Johnston started the day with a bye, and then defeated Dan Tabbert to make it to the quarterfinals round. In the quarterfinals he lost a 4-3 decision to Craig Becker of UW-Parkside, who eventually went on to in the 149 pounds weight class. Johnston then went on to defeat Tyler Stemper in a 10-7 decision. He then went on to defeat Zach Schumack with a pin in 1:46, and found a 13-4 major decision victory over Justin Berns to advance to the third place match. In the third place match, Johnston lost a 4-1 decision match against Jacob Roberts of St. Cloud State University. In the 133 pound bracket, Andy Miller (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./North) found his way to a sixth place finish. After winning his first three matches with a pin in 1:24 and two decisions, Miller dropped an 11-3 major decision to Josh Williams of St. Cloud State University. Miller went on to lose a 5-2 decision against Michael Barrie and finally lost a 16-5 major decision in the fifth place match to Tim Thurston of Iowa Lakes Community College. The Blugolds will be back in action January 7 to take on UW-Platteville and Lawrence at South Middle School in Eau Claire. - MT - |
