Sat, May 18, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Bielmeier Earns Academic All-American Honors Posted: Wednesday, November 26, 2008 TOWSON, Md. - For only the fourth time in Blugold football history, a player has been selected as a first team Academic All-American, as CoSIDA announced its 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams today. Safety Paul Bielmeier (Sr.-Edgar, Wis.), who is a kinesiology major with a 3.93 grade point average, is one of only 24 players from around the country to receive first team honors this year. The last time a Blugold football player was selected as a first team Academic All-American was in 2002 when Mike Bestul was recognized. Bestul was also a first team recipient in 2001. Mike Zeihen was the another Blugold to earn first team honors in 1980, while Mark Anderson received recognition in 1974. In addition, two others were named second team Academic All-Americans with Brandon Basken last receiving the honor in 2005. In all, only 13 other athletes from UW-Eau Claire have ever earned first team Academic All-America honors with Liz Faller being recognized for track and field last year. This season, Bielmeier was third on the team with 47 tackles and forced one fumble, while recovering another. Bielmeier started in all 10 games for Eau Claire this season.
