Posted: Wednesday, October 22, 2008
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire soccer team closed out its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) schedule tonight with a 7-0 win at UW-Platteville.
The Blugolds improve to 7-1-0 in WIAC play this season and 15-1-2 overall. Platteville drops to 8-8-2 overall and 2-6-0 in the WIAC. Eau Claire must now rely on UW-River Falls to take down Stevens Point this Saturday in order for the Blugolds to share the conference title with the Pointers.
Liz Kooistra (Sr.-Lakeville, Minn.) put the Blugolds on the board first tonight, scoring the eventual game-winner at 13:54. Less than a minute later she again found the net for Eau Claire to put the Blugolds up 2-0. Jamie Schiesel (So.-Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) assisted on both.
Rachel Nerison (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn.) then scored her 12th goal of the season less than two minutes later to increase the Blugolds lead. Amanda Shelton (Jr.-Brown Deer, Wis.) was credited with the assist, her first of the season. Before the first half was complete, Sara Aschenbrener (Sr.-Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake) added another goal.
At 36:40, Amy Smith (Sr.-Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) scored her 18th goal of the season and 46th of her career. Her 18 goals in a season ties her for second most on the Blugolds all-time list, while her 46 career goals ranks third. The Blugolds career record for goals in a season is 20, set by Kari Blasczyk in 2000. Smith is also third in career points with 117.
Schiesel scored the Blugolds 6th goal of the contest less than three minutes into the second half, while Kelsey Figg (So.-Little Canada, Minn./Roseville) wrapped up the scoring for the Blugolds at 72:17 with an assist from Megan Hillesheim (So.-Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine). The goal was the first in Figg's career.
Eau Claire ended up out-shooting Platteville 22-4 in the contest, putting up 12 shots-on-goal to Platteville's two. The Blugolds also edged the Pioneers in corner kicks at 4-0.
Allie Rivard (Sr.- Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) started in the net tonight and picked up the win. She finished with two saves. Emily Kidd (Fr.-St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) relieved her with less than 14 minutes to go. Platteville's goalies Tori Dolley and Hannah Krier split time in-goal for the Pioneers. Dolley gave up five goals and picked up four saves, while Krier allowed two goals and stopped one shot.
While the Blugolds completed WIAC competition today, they travel to St. Paul on Sunday to take on the University of St. Thomas in their last regular season contest. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m. The Blugolds will then be back at home for a WIAC Quarterfinal contest on Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. An opponent will be determined this weekend after the other WIAC schools complete their conference schedules.
