Women's Golf Remains On Top At WIAC Championship

ARKDALE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's golf team maintained its lead after the second round of the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship at Northern Bay Golf Resort and Marina.
The Blugolds, who were ahead by nine strokes yesterday, now lead the eight-team field by ten with 651 total strokes. Stevens Point had the best round of the day and is in second with 661. Whitewater is now in third with 680.
Katie Maurer (Fr.-Forest Lake, Minn./Convent of the Visitation), who led yesterday with 77 strokes, again shot a 77 to maintain her lead. Torie Ives (Jr.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) improved three strokes over the first round, shooting a 78 for a total of 159, and moved up a spot to second place overall. Lauren Gault (Fr.-Shorewood, Wis.) is in eighth with 167 strokes, while Katie Swift (So.-Onalaska, Wis.) now has 171 strokes and is in 12th. Emily Swift (Onalaska, Wis.) is currently in 20th with 178 strokes total.
Three Blugolds are also competing as individuals at the championship. Sara Mattes (Fr.-La Crosse, Wis./Central) leads all individuals, shooting 172 for a 13th place spot. Jess Spitzer (Fr.-Burlington, Wis.) is tied for 16th with 176 strokes, while Jamie Hauser (Fr.-Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) improved 13 strokes over the first day, shooting an 84 today for a two-round total of 181. She is tied for 24th place overall.
The championship will finish up on Sunday and the winner will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship.
