EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The 10th-ranked UW-Eau Claire soccer team handed St. Olaf College (Minn.) its first loss of the season with an 8-2 victory today at the Bollinger Fields.
St. Olaf, which came into the game undefeated, is now 3-1-0. Eau Claire has not lost a game yet this season, improving to 3-0-1. The last time the Blugolds scored eight goals in a game was on October 16, 2002, an 8-0 victory over UW-Superior. Prior to today's contest the Oles had only given up one goal the entire season while scoring 18.
The Blugolds got on the board very early in the game, with a goal by Amy Smith (Sr.-Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) at 4:16, her third goal of the season. Liz Kooistra (Sr.-Lakeville, Minn.) assisted on the goal.
Lisa Marco (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) then pushed the Blugolds' lead to two, after back-to-back goals within three minutes of each other. She scored at 35:42 and again at 38:31 to make the score 3-0. Sara Aschenbrener (Jr.-Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake) assisted on both.
The Blugolds then struck early in the second half, again with an Amy Smith goal and Kooistra assist at 47:07. Allison Muer (Sr.-Minneapolis, Minn./South) put the Blugolds up 5-0 at 56:50 with a goal on a penalty kick.
St. Olaf scored its first goal of the game at 67:35. Ellie Steiner scored, while Allyson Conner was credited with the assist. Less than five minutes later the Blugolds answered with an Ali Mater (So.-Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) score, her first of the season. Gina Christenbury (So.-Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) assisted on the goal.
The Oles then picked up their final goal of the contest at 79:55 with Christina Herron-Sweet scoring. The Blugolds put up two more goals before the end of the game with Jamie Schiesel (So.-Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) scoring at 86:35 and Jessica Millard (Sr.-Madison, Wis./La Follette) following with a goal at 89:49. Muer and Schiesel assisted on the two goals, respectively.
The Blugolds out-shot the Oles 20-3. Twelve of the Blugolds' shots were on-goal, while St. Olaf had two, both of which resulted in goals.
Allie Rivard (Sr.-Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) was in the goal until 66:48, when Emily Kidd (Fr.-St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) relieved her. Kidd played the rest of the way and gave up two goals. St. Olaf's Elizabeth Huggins was credited with today's loss. She played the first 50:26 of the game but came out due to an injury. Samantha Sickbert was in the net the rest of the game. Both goalies gave up four goals and both had two saves.
Up next the Blugolds will head to UW-River Falls for a game this Saturday. They will then be back home to take on Nebraska Wesleyan Sunday. Both games start at 2 p.m.
