Women's Tennis Ties For Third At Warhawk Invite

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team wrapped up a two-day trip to Whitewater, tying for third place out of eight teams at the Warhawk Invite today.

Whitewater won the invite for the third consecutive season, accumulating 51 points. UW-La Crosse took second with 28, while Oshkosh and Eau Claire tied for third with 19 points.

The highest individual finisher of the day for the Blugolds was Michelle Reinders (So.-Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), who took third place in the No. 3 draw. She won her first match by default but then lost to eventual champion 6-0, 6-2. In the third place match, Reinders defeated Beloit College's Briana Birkowitz in straight sets with scores of 6-0, 6-0. Gina Dahl (Jr.-Fort Atkinson, Wis.) and Jackie Gillespie (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) finished sixth in No. 1 and No. 2 singles draws, respectively.

In the No. 3 doubles draw, the Blugolds' team of Emily Knudson (Fr.-Delano, Minn.) and Courtney Lynne (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./Mayo) finished second, losing to Whitewater's Kelly Rutowski and Kathleen Kappel 6-1, 6-0 in championship. The No. 1 duo of Brenna McCormick (Jr.-Greendale, Wis.) and Erin Welch (Jr.-Tomah, Wis.) finished in third place, defeating UW-Stout's Sarah Smith and Amanda O?Keefe 6-3, 6-1 in the third place match. In the No. 2 doubles draw, Megan Born (Fr.-Antigo, Wis.) and Emily Hiebl (Fr.-Wausau, Wis./East) took sixth place.

Next Saturday the Blugolds will be at home for two matches. Eau Claire will take on UW-Oshkosh at 9 a.m. and will follow that with a meet against Luther College (Iowa) at 3 p.m.
