Posted: Friday, September 5, 2008
WHITEWATER, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team was handed an 8-1 loss by UW-Whitewater in the Blugolds' 2008 season opener.
Last year, Whitewater won the WIAC title and also advanced to the regional semifinals in the NCAA Tournament. The Warhawks are now 3-0 on the season, while the Blugolds fall to 0-1.
The No. 3 doubles team of Megan Born (Fr.-Antigo, Wis.) and Emily Hiebl (Fr.-Wausau, Wis./East) picked up the Blugolds only victory of the day. Born and Hiebl defeated Whitewater's Brittany Gering and Kara Amundson 8-5.
On the singles side, Brenna McCormick (Jr.-Greendale, Wis.) came close to a win in the No. 3 spot, but came up just short with scores of 1-6, 6-1, 4-6. Whitewater took the rest of the matches in straight sets.
The Blugolds will spend the night in Whitewater and will compete in the Warhawk Invite Saturday. Action gets underway at 9 a.m.
