Women's Tennis In Third After Day One

MADISON - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team is in third place following today's doubles competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships held here today at the Nielsen Tennis Center.

The tandem of Lindsey Lee (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) and Kristie Carlson (Fr.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) took second place in the three doubles bracket. Lee and Carlson breezed through the opening round defeating the team from UW-Stevens Point 8-0. They advanced to the finals with an 8-5 win over UW-River Falls. Lee and Carlson fell to the top-seeded pair of Shannon Mikulecky and Erin Fekete of UW-La Crosse 8-6 in the finals.

Sarah Riordan (Fr.-Appleton/North) and Molly Hunt (So.-Owatonna, MN) won their opening round match at two doubles 8-2 before falling to UW-Whitewater 8-5 in the second round. Riordan and Hunt secured third place with a 9-7 win over Becky Briese and Sarah VandenHoek of River Falls.

The number one doubles team of fifth-seeded Katie Kuzma (Jr.-Buffalo, MN) and Laura Geissler (So.-Coon Rapids, MN) upset the fourth-seeded River Falls team 8-5 before falling to the top-seeded tandem from Whitewater. Kuzma and Geissler fell in the third place match to third-seeded UW-Oshkosh 9-7 to finish fourth.

La Crosse and Whitewater are tied with 19 points following the first day of competition. Whitewater took first at one and two doubles while La Crosse took first at three doubles. Eau Claire is in third with 15 points followed by Oshkosh and River Falls with 11 points each.

The tournament will conclude tomorrow with singles competition starting at 9 a.m.
