OSHKOSH, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the three-day Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships at Albee Hall in Oshkosh today, taking third place out of six teams, while one diver and two swimmers were champions in four events.

The Blugold men captured third place for the eighth straight year at the championships while the women finished in third for the sixth consecutive year. Stevens Point won the meet on the men's side, its ninth consecutive crown, while La Crosse took first place on the women's side. Both Blugold teams improved dramatically over last season, with the men gaining 112 more points and the women gaining 69 more points than last year.

On day one of the championships, Amanda Kroger (Sr.-Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) captured first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.10. She finished more than three seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Kroger also became champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle, swimming to a time of 17:58.83, almost four seconds faster than the next finisher.

On the final day of the championships, Jon Poppele (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata) won the 200-yard backstroke. He won with a school-record time of 1:56.14. The school record was set back in 1992 by Eric White with a time of 1:56.24.

On the second day of the championships, Bryan Dykstra (Jr.-Racine, Wis./Horlick) took the top spot in the one-meter dive. Dykstra won the event with a score of 489.85, finishing almost 16 points ahead of second place finisher Jacob Chadderdon of Oshkosh. Chadderdon won the three-meter dive on day one while Dykstra took third.

The men's and women's swimming teams saw great improvements throughout the season and a couple of people were close to school records. Poppele broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke while Alyssa Trainor (Fr.-Winona, Minn./Cotter) was about one second off the record in the same event and had a fourth place finish with a time of 2:13.39. Chris Paradeise (Fr.-Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) placed second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:55.59, shaving about 50 seconds off his previous season best time. Nick Mehring (Fr.-Eagan, Minn./Eastview) also dropped about 40 seconds off his season best time to in the event to finish in sixth

Patrick Finley (Jr.-Waunakee, Wis.) also swam well this year and was able to shave off more than two seconds from last year's championship time in the 200-yard freestyle to take home third place this year with a time of 1:45.70. He finished under seven-tenths of a second out of first place.
