Wed, Jun 19, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Swimming & Diving In Third After Day One Posted: Thursday, February 21, 2008 OSHKOSH, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the first of three days at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships held at Albee Hall in Oshkosh with the both teams in third place. The Blugold men scored 216 points today to put them in third. They trail UW-Stevens Point, which is currently in first, by only 40 points. UW-La Crosse is in second with 223 points. Whitewater trails the Blugolds in fourth place with 127, while UW-Oshkosh has 88 and is in fifth place. UW-River Falls is currently in last place with 53. On the women's side, La Crosse leads the six-team field with 300 while Stevens Point is in second with 235 points. Eau Claire has 190 for its third place spot and Whitewater is in fourth with 105. River Falls and Oshkosh are neck-in-neck with the Falcons scoring 67 points today while Oshkosh scored 66. The highest finisher for the Blugold men today was Bryan Dykstra (Jr.-Racine, Wis./Horlick). Dykstra competed in the three-meter dive tonight and took third place with a score of 421.50. Oshkosh's Jacob Chadderdon won the event with 484.95. Last season Dykstra took second place with a score of 444.39 while Chadderon won the event with a score of 510.45. The Eau Claire men also had two relay teams take third place. In the second finals event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Trevor Miller (Fr.-South St. Paul, Minn.), Brett Olsen (So.-New Berlin, Wis./West Allis Hale), Bruce Eigner (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) and Patrick Finley (Jr.-Waunakee, Wis.) finished with a time of 1:27.65. They finished just over three seconds out of first place. The relay team of Jon Poppele (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Wayzata), Peter Schultz (Jr.-Oakdale, Minn./North), Brian Jordan (Sr.-Madison, Wis./West) and Finley finished with a time of 3:35.95 for a third place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The Blugold men also had nine other finishes within the top eight places in four events today. The women also did well in day one and had one first place finisher. Amanda Kroger (Sr.-Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.10. She finished more than three seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Kroger made a big improvement from last year as she finished in 14th place last season, swimming 24 seconds slower. The women's relay teams also fared well, taking third in the 200-yard freestyle relay and fourth in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Ann Grossklaus (So.-Wausau, Wis./West), Megan Lindner (Fr.-Muskego, Wis.), Emily Diehl (Sr.-Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Megan Finley (Fr.-Waunakee, Wis.) finished with a time of 1:40.64 for the third place finish, missing first place by just over three seconds. In the 400-yard race, the Blugolds missed third place by three-tenths of a second. Alyssa Trainor (Fr.-Winona, Minn./Cotter), Jenna Spicer (Jr.-Hastings, Minn.), Siera Schenck (Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) and Grossklaus finished with a time of 4:08.42. The Blugold women also had five other swimmers in four other events that finished in eighth place or better. The Blugolds will be back in the pool Friday for the second day of the WIAC Championships. Preliminaries for the day's events will start at 10 a.m. while finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. - KM - |
