Women's Basketball Takes A Loss To Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire women's basketball team let UW-Stevens Point go on an 8-0 run that ultimately led to the loss to Stevens Point, 57-43.

The Blugolds are ranked 18th by D3hoops.com and with the loss tonight drop to 12-2 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play and 18-5 overall. The win for the Pointers puts them with a 9-4 WIAC record and an 18-4 overall record.

With 2:15 left in the first half, Stevens Point's Chelsea Kranz made a three pointer than put the Pointers up 23-21. The Pointers added to their lead with a jumper from Jesirae Heuer that closed the half with a 25-21 Pointers lead. The Pointers came out firing in the second half. They got a three pointer from Laura Neuenfeldt early and later got a Haley Houghton three pointer to put the lead at eight. The Blugolds would chip at the lead with a Michelle Burns (Sr.-Eau Claire, WI/North) jumper and a Heidi Arciszewski (Jr.-Thorp, WI) jump shot. The Blugolds would get even with a Burns jumper, and then add to their lead with an Arciszewski layup. Stevens Point would answer with Heuer free throws and two back-to-back Houghton three pointers to get the lead to six. Houghton would then add two free throws to get the Pointers biggest lead of the night.

The Pointers and Blugolds would go trading baskets for four minutes before Janell VanGomple got a jumper to get the lead to 10. The Blugolds would try a rally with a Heather Witt (Jr.-Kendall, WI/Royall) layup and Missy Fremstad (Jr.-Osseo, WI/Osseo-Fairchild) free throws, but Stevens Point couldn't miss with free throws. At the buzzer the lead would be 14 for the Pointers and the score would be 57-43.

The Pointers shot 33 percent from the field, 42 percent from three point range, and 84 percent from the free throw line. The Blugolds shot 29 percent from the field, 14 percent from three point range, and 58 percent from the free throw line. The Blugolds were outrebounded 46-36 and committed seven more personal fouls.

Stevens Point was led by Houghton's 11 points and Neuenfeldt's 10 points and seven rebounds. The Blugolds were led Burns' 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Next up for the Blugolds in UW-Platteville next Wednesday at Zorn Arena starting at 7 p.m.
