STEVENS POINT - Maggie Loney (Jr. -River Falls) took first place in leading the UW-Eau Claire women's golf team to their third Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in seven years.

The Blugolds shaved 25 strokes off yesterday's round and shot 22 shots better than any other team today in erasing yesterday's one shot deficit. Eau Claire shot a 322 today and a 669 for the tournament. The 23-stroke win was the biggest margin of victory in the history of the tournament.

UW-Platteville moved up one spot from yesterday finishing the tournament at 692 while UW-River Falls finished one shot back of the Pioneers with a 693. UW-Oshkosh saw their two-year run as champions end with a sixth place finish.

Loney became the fourth Blugold in school history to finish first and the second Blugold in the last two years. Loney knocked eight strokes off yesterday's round with a 3-over 76 to win by two strokes over Ellen Berndt of River Falls. Loney's 160 was the third lowest round in tournament history.

Meghan Sobotta (Fr.-Arcadia) and Jesse Thompson (So.-Stevens Point/SPASH) joined Loney in the top five. Sobotta shot an 80 today to finish at 165 for the tournament and in third place overall. Thompson shaved 14 strokes off yesterday's round to finish at 168 and alone in fifth. The 14-shot improvement from day one was the best in the tournament.

Andrea Kloppman (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) finished fourth on the Blugolds with a 178 while Kelly Gerzsenyi (So.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) finished up at 180.

The win improves the Blugolds record to 99-12 overall and concludes the fall season.
