Swimming & Diving Defeat Whitewater

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated UW-Whitewater this afternoon on parents day at the McPhee Pool.
The men won by a score of 150-91, and the women won with a score of 177-66. With the victories, both teams improve to 3-2 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) dual meet competition.
In an impressive performance turned in by the women, Angie Bakula (Fr.-Appleton, Wis./West) led the way on the swimming side. Bakula turned first place performances in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Bakula won the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 2:00.9 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:29.39.
On the diving side, the Blugolds were led by Sarah Myers (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North). Myers won both the one-meter diving competition and the three-meter diving competition. Myers claimed the one-meter diving victory with a score of 216.65 and the three-meter with a score of 231.40.
Six other Blugold women swimmers took first place in their respective events, including Amanda Kroger (Sr.-Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View), Megan Finley (Fr.-Waunakee, Wis.), Siera Schenck (Fr.-Sun Prairie, Wis.), Amy Stewart (So.-South Milwaukee, Wis.), Alyssa Trainor (Fr.-Winona, Minn./Cotter), and Jenna Spicer (Jr.-Hastings, Minn.).
The men's swimming and diving team had seven first place finishes during the meet. Trevor Miller (Fr.-South St. Paul, MN) contributed victories in the 50-yard freestyle event and the 100-yard freestyle event with times of 22.73 and 50.52, respectively. Jonathan Poppele (Fr.-Maple Grove, MN/Wayzata) also contributed a pair of victories. Poppele won the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:26.23 and 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.63. Nicholas Mehring (Fr.-Eagan, Minn./Eastview) also brought home a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.79.
Brian Dykstra (Jr.-Racine, WI/Horlick) dominated the competition on the diving board. Dykstra took home victories in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. He won the one-meter event with a score of 259.60 and the three meter event with a national qualifying score of 285.30.
Eau Claire will now have three weeks off before it travels to Oshkosh for the WIAC Championship. The meet is set to take place February 21-23.
