Thu, Jun 20, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Women's Golf Looks To Take Conference Championship Posted: Thursday, October 7, 2004 STEVENS POINT - The UW-Eau Claire women's golf team will look to end UW-Oshkosh's two-year run as conference champions when they compete in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships this weekend. The Blugolds are coming off two first place finished the last two weeks at the UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh Invites. Eau Claire has never finished lower than second place at the conference championships. Eau Claire has finished at least three strokes ahead of any conference team in every tournament they have competed in this year. The Blugolds beat the nearest WIAC team by 32 strokes at last week's UW-Oshkosh Invite. Maggie Loney (Jr.-River Falls) leads the Blugolds in scoring average with an average round of 79.09. Loney has finished first in the UW-Eau Claire Invite, Knox Invite and UW-Oshkosh Invite. Jesse Thompson (So.-Stevens Point/SPASH) has finished in the top ten in five tournaments this year including the last three. Thompson took first in the Carthage College Invite and the UW-Whitewater Invite while averaging 81.63 strokes per round. Meghan Sobotta (Fr.-Arcadia) has finished in the top ten in three events and is third on the Blugolds in scoring average. Sobotta is followed by Kelly Gerzsenyi (So.-Rochester, MN/Mayo), Andrea Kloppman (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) and Molly Madson (Fr.-Ashwaubenon). Oshkosh became the first team in WIAC history to win back-to-back championships last year but have lost four golfers from last year's team. The Titans will be led by returning Conference Player of the Year Jennifer Young. Young took second last year followed by teammate Cheryl Treadwell, who took first place in 2002 as a freshman. UW-Platteville took third last year and is led by the return of Linda Engelke. Engelke tied for fourth at last year's championship and finished third at the Clarke Invite and fourth at the UW-Whitewater Invite this year. Eau Claire has finished at least three strokes ahead of any conference team in every tournament they have competed in this year. The Blugolds beat the nearest WIAC team by 32 strokes at last week's UW-Oshkosh Invite. UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater, and UW-Superior will also be competing in the championships. The 36-hole tournament is scheduled to tee off at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Stevens Point Country Club. The tournament will conclude Sunday with the first grout teeing off at 10 a.m.
