Posted: Friday, January 18, 2008
STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team matched UW-Stevens Point shot-for-shot tonight but came on the short end of a 2-1 score.
The Blugolds are 3-4-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) games this year and 7-11-0 overall. The Pointers climb to 3-4-0 as well in NCHA contests and now post a 12-5-1 overall mark.
There was no scoring until the latter half of the second when Shane Foster's evenhanded goal found net at 12:47 for a Stevens Point lead. The Pointers outshot Eau Claire 8-to-7 in the second after Eau Claire outperformed Stevens Point 9-to-8 in the first.
The third was even closer, with both teams taking 13 shots and ending with 29 on the game. The two that mattered were Pat Lee's power play goal at 14:12 for the home squad and the Sean Garrity (Sr.-North St. Paul, MN/North) score at 17:48 to put the Blugolds on the board. Sam Bauler (Jr.-Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) assisted on the evensided shot.
Tyler Brigl (So.-Eagan, MN) would make 27 saves in the game on the defensive end.
Both teams struggled when on the advantage. The Pointers went 1-for-9 and Eau Claire converted on 0-for-6. The Blugolds had nine penalties compared to six for Stevens Point.
Eau Claire will now face NCHA-leading St. Norbert College next Friday. The Green Knights are ranked first in the nation.
