Fri, May 24, 2013 No Event(s) Scheduled For Selected Date Wrestlers Go Down To Wire In Win Posted: Tuesday, January 8, 2008 PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team took home a 22-20 victory in a close fought battle against UW-Platteville at Williams Fieldhouse tonight. With Eau Claire down 19-20 going into the final match, heavyweight Nick Hoeft (Sr.-Merrill, Wis.) scored a takedown with eight seconds remaining in the match to defeat Platteville's Cody Weber 4-3. He captured three points to lift the Blugolds to their 22-20 win. Hoeft's victory improves his individual record to 9-7 in the heavyweight division.
Josh Holforty (Jr.-Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy), who is ranked sixth nationally at 197 pounds in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Brute - Adidas poll, took an 11-3 victory over Michael Jackowski. The win improves Holforty's season record to 18-2. Eau Claire's Greg Sonnentag (Fr.-Cadott, Wis.) scored the only pin for the Blugolds tonight, pinning Andrew Skog at 2:50 at 125 pounds. The pin is Sonnentag's third this season, tied for most on the team. Andy Miller (Jr.-Appleton, Wis./North) defeated Ross George by a 6-2 decision at 133 pounds, while it took Andy Johnston (So.-St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) two overtimes to defeat Dillon Pontnack 2-1 at 149 pounds. Joey Miller (Sr.-Lake Tomahawk, Wis.) also took home a victory, defeating Cory Zuberbier 7-4 at 174 pounds. The win improves the Blugolds' record to 10-10 overall, and they remain undefeated in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) meets with a 2-0 record. Platteville falls to 1-3 in WIAC dual meet action. The Blugolds will be back in action this Friday when they travel to St. Cloud, Minn. to take on St. Cloud State. The last two seasons that Eau Claire and Platteville faced each other also came down to the heavyweights to determine a winner. Last season, Eau Claire won 22-18 while Platteville was victorious in 2005-06 with a score of 24-22.
