St. thomas Skates To A 3-1 Victory Over Men's Hockey

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team out-shot St. Thomas University (Minn.) tonight at Hobbs Ice Center, but the Blugolds were unable to find the net in a 3-1 non-conference loss.

The Blugolds drop to 4-6-0 overall and are on a four game losing streak, only winning one of its last five games. The Tommies move to 6-2-1 on the season.

The teams skated to a scoreless first period where the Blugolds out-shot the Tommies 12-3. At the 4:25 mark in the second period Todd Alexander would score the first goal of the game on a St. Thomas power play. Nick Pernula and Adam Davis had the assists on the goal.

Dan Decato (Fr.- Verona, WI) would answer at the 8:08 mark in the second period scoring his first career goal for Eau Claire. Sean Garrity (Sr.- North St. Paul, MN/North) had the first assist, his sixth on the season, and Greg Petersen (Jr.- Maple Grove, MN/Totino-Grace) had the second assist, his fourth on the season.

The lead quickly shifted back to St. Thomas when Nate Ryan scored at the 14:19 mark. Andrew Kappers had the assist on the goal. Andrew Panchenko would add another goal for St. Thomas at the 14:07 mark in the third period to make the score 3-1.

The Blugolds out-shot the Tommies 38-14 on the night. St. Thomas was 1-for-3 on the power play and Eau Claire was 0-for-4. The Tommies took five penalties and the Blugolds took four.

Tyler Brigl (So.- Eagan, MN) was between the pipes for the Blugolds, he allowed three goals on 14 shots. Brigl had 10 saves total with one shot going off the goal pipe. Tyler Chestnut was in the net for the Tommies; he had 36 saves and allowed one goal for the win.

The Blugolds will be back in action this weekend for two Northern Collegiate Athletic Conference (NCHA) games. On Friday night the Blugolds will take on St. Scholastica and Saturday they will play UW-Superior, both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
