Stout Scores With 29 Seconds Remaining To Defeat Men's Hockey

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team led UW-Stout 1-0 until 29 seconds into the third period when the Blue Devils tied the game 1-1. The game was not decided until the 19:31 mark in the third period when Andy Sternberg scored the game winning goal to get the 2-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) victory tonight at Hobbs Ice Center.
The Blugolds now drop to 1-3-0 in the NCHA and 4-5-0 overall. The Blue Devils now move to 3-1-0 in the NCHA and 10-1-1 overall. The Blue Devils were ranked 8th in the USCHO.com Division III Men's Hockey poll entering this weekends play. Stout is ranked 3rd in the NCHA behind St. Norbert and UW-River Falls who are tied for first with 3-0-1 records in the NCHA.
The Blugolds jumped on the board 4:12 into the game with a power play goal from Jesse Vesel (Jr.- Hibbing, MN) his first goal of the season. DJ Clark (So.- Blaine, MN) had the first assist; his second of the season and Tyler Trudell (So.- Waukesha, WI/South) has the second assist, his sixth of the season.
The game would remain at 1-0 until the third period when Derek Hanson scored his 12th goal of the season for UW-Stout to tie the game. Joel Gaulrapp had the first assist; his ninth of the season and Jack Wolgemuth had the second assist, his 13th of the season.
With 29 seconds remaining in the third period Sternberg would score the game winning goal with the assist going to Wolgemuth and Danny Ryan Jr. his fifth of the season.
Tyler Brigl (So.- Eagan, MN) was in the net for the Blugolds; he had 34 saves on the night and allowed two goals. Matt Koenig was between the pipes for the Blue Devils; he had 33 saves and allowed one goal.
The Blue Devils out-shot the Blugolds 36-to-34. The Blugolds took seven penalties for 25 minutes including a five minute major given to Joe Bluhm (So.- Red Wing, MN) for hitting from behind. Bluhm also received a 10 minute game misconduct and was ejected. The Blue Devils took six penalties for 12 minutes.
The Blugolds will be back in action Tuesday night at Hobbs Ice Center for a non-conference game against St. Thomas. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
