Soccer To Take On Stevens Point In WIAC Championship Match

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The top-seed UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team will host its third straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship match tomorrow at the Bollinger Fields against second seed UW-Stevens Point.
UW-Stevens point defeated third-seed UW-Whitewater today at the Bollinger Fields 3-2. Ranked 22nd in the Division III National Soccer Polls (NSCAA/adidas) the Pointers are 16-3-1. Whitewater ended its season 12-9-1 overall.
Amanda Prawat (Jr.- Oregon, WI) scored her 23rd and 24th goals of the season in today's semifinal action. Prawat's first goal, unassisted, came 41 seconds into the first half. Prawat would add her second goal of the match 32 minutes later with the assist going to Kaylee Weise (Jr.- Brookfield, WI/East).
Whitewater's Jenna Samp (Fr.- Palatine, IL/Palatine) scored at the 41:58 mark in the first half. Stevens Point went into the half up 2-1. Each team had four shots on goal in the first half, while Whitewater had four corner kicks compared to Stevens Points three.
Weise scored her 15th goal of the season for Stevens Point at the 62:08 mark in the second half making the score 3-1. Whitewater's Holly U?ren (Fr.- Mount Horeb, WI/Mount Horeb) scored at the 89:00 mark to bring her team within one. U?ren's goal would be the final of the contest making the final score 3-2.
Whitewater's goalie Amy Bailey (Fr.- Whitefish Bay, WI) had four saves and allowed three goals. Stevens Point's goalie Meredith DeCaluwe (Sr.- Naperville, IL/Central) had four saves and allowed two goals. Whitewater outshot Stevens Point 12-10 and corner kicks were even with six apiece.
Tomorrow's championship action will begin at 1 p.m. at the Bollinger Fields when the Blugolds take on the Pointers for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Eau Claire beat UW-La Crosse today in earlier semifinal action 5-1.
The Blugolds and Pointers faced off earlier this season on Oct. 6, 2007 for a conference match-up in Stevens Point. The Blugolds came back from a 3-0 halftime deficit to win 4-3 in overtime. Eau Claire freshmen scored all four of the Blugolds goals with the game winner scored by Gina Christenbury (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Kenosha Tremper) at the 97:13 mark.
Stevens Point brings the most prolific offense to the championship match. The Pointers lead the WIAC in points (8.61/game), goals (3.06/game), and assists per game (2.50). Prawat leads the league with 24 goals, scoring two in today's semifinal game. Prawat's teammate Weise is second in the same category with 15 goals, scoring one in today's semifinal game.
The Blugolds are ranked second in points (7.95/game), goals (2.84/game) and assists per game (1.24). Eau Claire's Amy Smith (Jr.- Bloomington, MN/Thomas Jefferson) ranks in the top three statistically in points (35), goals (13), and assists per game (9). Smith and teammate Liz Kooistra (Jr.- Lakeville, MN) are tied for second with four game-winning goals apiece.
Eau Claire, goalie Allie Rivard (Jr.- Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) leads the league in save percentage with .866 percent on 31 saves. Rivard ranks first in goals allowed, allowing only four goals this season. The Blugolds have the top-ranked defense and have 13 shutouts this season.
Stevens Point goalie DeCaluwe is second in the league with six shutouts and fourth in save percentage .800 on 85 saves.
Tickets for Saturday's championship action between Eau Claire and Stevens Point can be purchased at the Bollinger Fields in Eau Claire. The cost will be $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for youths, and free for all WIAC students with ID.
The winner of Saturday's WIAC Championship game earns an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
