EAU CLAIRE, Wis. ?The men's and women's swimming and diving teams rolled over the UW-Oshkosh competition today at the McPhee Pool.

The men won 181-61 and the women took the meet 179-52. It was the first meet of the year for both teams. There were only two events the Titans took first in for the entire competition. Through it all, Coach Jerry Kollross was impressed with how the underclassmen handled their first meet.

"The freshman had really great races today and put on a good meet," Kollross said. He added that races by Angie Bakula (Fr.-Appleton/West), Mari Kissell (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN), Jonathan Poppele (Fr.-Maple Grove, MN/Wayzata) and Ben Macalalad (Fr.-Wausau/East) stuck out as top performances.

In the men's swimming events, the team swept the leaderboards. The lone multiple winner of the day was Poppele. He swam a 2:08.24 200-yard IM and had a 58.93 100-yard backstroke time. Macalalad took the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:39.06. Patrick Finley (Jr.-Waunakee) had a 1:55.02 time in the 200-yard freestyle and Sampson Simeon (Fr.-Madison/East) posted a 23.14 mark in the 50-yard freestyle. Matt Schultz (So.-Oakdale, MN/North) finished in 57.32 for the 100-yard butterfly. Brett Olsen (So.-New Berlin/West Allis Hale) took home first for the 100-yard freestyle with a 51.62 swim. Nick Mehring (Fr.-Eagan, MN/Eastview) had a 5:14.40 500-yard freestyle and Bruce Eigner (Fr.-Eau Claire/North) clocked in at 1:04.97 on the 100-yard breaststroke competition.

The relay teams also put on an impressive showing. Tom Dahl (Fr.-Minnetonka, MN/Hopkins), Finley, Olsen, and Matt Schultz combined for a 1:32.49 200-yard freestyle relay. In the 200-yard medley relay, Poppele, Matt Schultz, Peter Schultz (Jr.-Oakdale, MN/North), and Simeon finished the race in 1:44.58.

In both diving events, the Blugolds fell to Jacob Chadderdon, last year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Diver of the Meet for the conference championships.

Sarah Myers (Sr.-Eau Claire/North) took both the one-meter and three-meter for the women. She totaled scores of 213.00 and 218.70.

The women's swimmers were just as dominant as the men. Bakula was the only woman swimmer to take two firsts. She had a 1,000 freestyle on a 11:13.07 time along with a 1:04.94 100 butterfly. Amy Stewart (So.-South Milwaukee) and her 2:06.83 time on the 200 freestyle took first, as did Megan Finley (Fr.-Waunakee) and her 26.31 time in the 50 freestyle. In the 200 IM, Emily Diehl (Sr.-Prairie du Sac/Sauk Prairie) put on a 2:22.12 performance while Ann Grossklaus (So.-Wausau/West) swam a 58.29 100 freestyle. Mari Bodensteiner (So.-Red Wing, MN) finished the 100 backstroke in 1:03.94 and Kissell swam to a 5:38.57 finish in the 500 freestyle. Jenna Spicer (Jr.-Hastings, MN) took her spot in 1:14.50 during the 100 breaststroke.

The relay squad performed well, too. Bakula, Grossklaus, Megan Lindner (Fr.-Muskego) and Alyssa Trainor (Fr.-Winona, MN/Cotter) had a 1:46.11 effort in the 200 freestyle relay. Bodensteiner, Diehl, Kissell and Missy Kleist (So.-Eau Claire/North) came through on a 1:58.76 race in the 200 medley relay.

The action stays in Eau Claire with tomorrow's meet, the Midwest Coed Relays. It has a 10 a.m. scheduled start time.
