EAU CLAIRE - On a day where the UW-Eau Claire men's track and field team participated in three different track meets on both sides of the Mississippi River, the 4 x 200-meter relay highlighted the day by finishing fourth at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Blugolds also had several individuals compete at both the Kip Janvrin Open hosted by Simpson College (IA) and the Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College (MI).
At the Drake Relays, where five different relays competed today, the 4 x 200 relay of Nick Kropp (Fr.-Green Bay/Preble), Nick Aliota (Sr.-Brookfield/Central), Adam Sturgis (Sr.-Bruce) and Bryan Tschudy (So.-New Richmond) completed the race in a time of 1:27.27. The time was more than four seconds off their best time of the season set last week. Oklahoma Baptist, a NAIA Division 1 program, won the race in 1:24.19 followed by NCAA Division II Central Missouri finishing in second place in 1:24.82. Lincoln (PA) was the only NCAA Division III school to finish ahead of the Blugolds finishing third with a time of 1:25.13
In preliminary action the 4 x 100-meter relay team of Justin Janke (So.-Black River Falls), Kropp, Aliota and Frankie Adams (So.-Burnsville, MN) placed 12th in 42.16 seconds, the fastest time by any Blugold 4 x 100 relay this season. The 4 x 800-meter relay team of Adam Wolfe (Jr.-Marshfield), Joseph Veriga (Sr.-Cudahy), Rob Wilcox (So.-Green Bay/Southwest) and Wes Fischer (So.-Rosemount, MN) placed 14th clocking in at 7:43.19 cutting over 28 seconds off last week's performance in the same event. Also competing at the Drake Relays was the 4 x 400-meter relay team of Justin White (Fr.-Arcadia), Tim Braunschweig (Fr.-Mukwonago), Brian Christ (Jr.-Arcadia) and Chris Kupfer (So.-Germantown).
After the Drake Relays several Blugold runners competed at the Kip Janvrin Open led by Adams, who tied for second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.19 seconds. Tschudy finished sixth in the 200-meter dash in a season-best 22.49 seconds. Both Adams and Tschudy were the top Division III finishers in each event. The meet featured 39 teams and 1,263 entries from schools of every NCAA and NAIA level.
At the Gina Relays hosted by NCAA Division II Hillsdale College (MI), Ted Lillie (Jr.-North St. Paul, MN) placed 83rd in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:23.78.
