Posted: Saturday, April 7, 2007
MADISON - The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team split its final two matches in the Midwest Invite that concluded here Saturday.
The Blugolds defeated St. Mary's College of Indiana, 7-2, then fell to conference rival UW-Whitewater by a 5-2 count to finish 10th in the 11-team meet which involved the top teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. The competition is likely to determine some of the at-large berths for the NCAA Division III tournament.
The split leaves the Blugolds with a 15-6 dual meet record on the season. They will close out their 2006-07 campaign at Carleton College next Saturday.
Still playing without No. 1 player Sarah Riordan (Appleton/West), who is sidelined with a leg injury, the Blugolds won all but the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions against St. Mary's.
Winning their singles matches against St. Mary's were Kristie Carlson (Jr.-Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View) at No. 2, Liz Deprey (Jr.-Green Bay/Notre Dame) at No. 4, Brenna McCormick (Fr.-Greendale) at No. 5, and Erin Welch (Fr.-Tomah) at No. 6.
The doubles' wins came from Laura Geissler (Sr.-Coon Rapids, MN) and Gina Dahl (Fr.-Fort Atkinson) at No. 1, Carlson and McCormick at No. 2 and Deprey and Courtney Lynne (Fr.-Rochester, MN) at No. 3.
Against Whitewater, the only Blugold wins came from McCormick and Welch at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
