Men's Basketball Announces Team Award Winners

EAU CLAIRE - UW-Eau Claire men's basketball coach Terry Gibbons recently announced the team award winners for the 2006-07 season.
Inside player Dan Beyer (Jr.-Waukesha/Catholic Memorial) was named the team's Most Valuable Player. An honorable mention All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) honoree this season, Beyer led the Blugolds in points (14.5/game), rebounds (6.7/game), steals (23), field goal percentage (.525) and minutes played (29.6/game). Beyer scored 40 points in the Blugolds' regular season finale at UW-Whitewater, the most points scored by an Eau Claire player since Chester Smith scored 41 points against UW-Oshkosh in 1985. Beyer recorded five double-doubles in both scoring and rebounding this season. Only one other Blugold achieved a scoring and rebounding double-double this season.
The Most Valuable New Player award was presented to inside player Geoff Probst (Fr.-Moose Lake, MN/North Dakota). Probst appeared in 24 games, including six starts, averaging 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. His rebound total was the second-best per game average on the team. In his first-ever game as a Blugold Probst scored 19 points in 14 minutes converting on 8-of-10 field goals and making all three three-point attempts in a 78-65 victory at St. Mary's (MN).
The Fireman award given to the player who gives a spark from the bench went to outside player Luke Meier (Jr.-Cross Plains/Middleton). Playing in all 26 games, Meier led the team in three-point field goal percentage making 26-of-53 attempts (.491) from behind the arc. Meier also shot a team-best 77.5 percent (31-40) from the free throw line for players who averaged more than one free throw attempt per game. For the season Meier averaged 5.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in 11.7 minutes per game.
The Most Improved award was presented to outside player Colin Boone (Fr.-Eau Claire/Memorial). Boone's minutes increased throughout the season coming off the bench as a point guard.
Inside/outside player Matt Riley (Sr.-Cadott) was presented with the Big D award. Riley was constantly matched up with the opponent's best player, whether they played in the paint or on the perimeter.
Inside/outside player Jared Supalla (Sr.-Eden Prairie, MN) received the team Hustle award. Supalla showed great hustle and effort throughout the season culminating in a career-best 10 point, five rebound performance in the finale game of the season at UW-Stevens Point. Supalla and outside player Tony Riley (Jr.-Cadott) were both honored with the team's Inspirational award.
