PLATTEVILLE - The UW-Eau Claire soccer allowed only one shot in blanking UW-Platteville 5-0 here today in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season opener for the Blugolds.
After a scoreless opening 33 minutes, the Blugolds got on the board when Marcia Foltz (Jr.-Madison/Memorial) scored on a penalty kick at the 33:19 mark. Foltz made it 2-0 five minutes later taking a Kelly Peterson (Jr.-Hudson) pass and putting it in the net for her third goal of the season.
Melissa Campion (Sr.-Burnsville, MN) made it 3-0 just before half scoring on a penalty kick at the 43 minute mark.
Eau Claire increased the lead to four goals at the 77 minute mark when Maria Iaizzo (Jr.-White Bear Lake, MN) scored on a Jill Cope (Jr.-Golden Valley, MN/Hopkins) pass. Peterson concluded the scoring receiving a Cope pass and putting it past the goalie at the 85 minute mark.
The Blugold defense made it easy on goalie Annie Scharenbroich (So.-White Bear Lake, MN/South) who stopped the only shot that came her way.
Eau Claire outshot the Pioneers 16-1 and had nine corner kicks while allowing none for Platteville.
The win improves Eau Claire's record to 2-3 overall and drops the Pioneer's record to 4-3 on the season.
The Blugold will be in action next when they play non-conference opponent St. Olaf Wednesday in Northfield, Minn. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
