Wrestling Suffers First Conference Defeat

LA CROSSE - The UW-Eau Claire wrestling team suffered its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) dual meet loss tonight with a 32-10 defeat to perennial power and third-ranked UW-La Crosse at Mitchell Hall.
The Blugolds, who are ranked 28th in the current Brute/Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, fall to 4-1 in the WIAC and 11-5 overall in dual meets. The Eagles improve to 5-1 in the conference and 13-1 in overall dual meets. Their only loss came earlier this season at UW-Platteville.
There were only three Blugolds that picked up victories tonight. Dave Vanevenhoven (Sr.-Appleton, WI/Kaukauna) at 149 pounds won by major decision, 17-3 over Eric Seppelt. Nick Hoeft (Jr.-Merrill, WI) at 184 pounds won by decision, 5-3 over Brenden Faust. Finally, Josh Holforty (So.-Bloomington, MN/Kennedy) at 197 pounds won his ninth match in a row with an 8-3 decision over Josh Passe.
La Crosse's Josh Chelf, who is ranked No.1 in the division III at 174 pounds, defeated Joey Miller (Jr.-Lake Tomahawk, WI/Lakeland Union) by pin fall at 2:04. Ross Needham at 157 pounds and Scott Dorn at 165 pounds are both ranked second in their individual weight classes and both won by major decision.
The Blugolds will host Lakeland College Friday night at the McPhee Physical Education Center. The action begins at 7 p.m.
