It was the second overtime game in as many nights for Eau Claire, who lost to St. Scholastica (MN) last night 5-4 in overtime. The Blugolds are now 8-10-3 overall and 1-7-2 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) contests. The Yellowjackets are 16-4-1 and 6-3-1 in the NCHA. Prior to tonight's tie, the Blugolds had lost their last six meetings to the Yellowjackets. The Blugolds got on the scoreboard first when Steve Dus (Sr.-Onalaska, WI) scored an even-handed goal just two minutes into the contest to give Eau Claire a 1-0 lead. Kevin Knapp (Sr.-Blaine, MN/Spring Lake Park) and Tyler Wiegel (Fr.-Madison, WI/Oregon) had the assists. The Yellowjackets evened-up the score with 15:42 remaining in the first period when Derek Paige scored an even-handed goal of his own. Superior took the lead with a little more than five minutes remaining in the first period on a Seth Reda goal to make the score 2-1 Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets out-shot the Blugolds 9-7 in the first period. After a scoreless second period in which the Blugolds out-shot the Yellowjackets 8-4, Superior extended its lead to 3-1 just one minute into the third period when Corey Lennartson scored a short-handed goal. The Blugolds would cut the Superior lead in half with a little less than 16 minutes to play on a Dave Coleman (Sr.-Whitby, ONT/Leo J. Austin) power play goal to make the score 3-2 Yellowjackets. Dan Fina (So.-Fontana/Glenbard South, IL) had the assist. After a game misconduct penalty on Superior, the Blugolds tied the game up at 3-3 when Steve Dus scored his second goal of the night, a power play goal, with 13:48 remaining in the contest. Jesse Vesel (So.-Hibbing, MN) had the assist. The Yellowjackets had the power play the final two minutes of the game but were unable to score as the game went into overtime. Superior had another power play opportunity again in overtime, but the Blugolds killed it and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. The Yellowjackets out-shot the Blugolds for the game 27-26. Blugold goaltender Tyler Brigl (Fr.-Eagan, MN) performed well when it mattered, stopping 24 shots total, including 13 in the third period and overtime combined. The Blugolds were 2-for-5 on the power-play, while Superior was 0-for-6. The Blugolds return home next Friday to face St. Norbert College. The puck drops at the Hobbs Ice Center at 7 p.m. - JR - |
