Posted: Saturday, January 20, 2007
RIVER FALLS - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team outshot fourth-ranked UW-River Falls but could not come away with goals as River Falls won 4-1 tonight at Hunt Arena.
Eau Claire drops to 1-6-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and 8-9-2 overall. The Falcons are 7-1-0 in NCHA play and 16-2-1 overall.
After a period in which the Blugolds outshot River Falls 16-to-5, the Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the second off of two even-strength scores. Sean Garrity (Jr.-North St. Paul, MN) got Eau Claire to within one at 18:54 with Andrew Johnson (So.-Andover, MN/Anoka) assisting on the evenhanded strike. It remained a one-goal game into much of the third.
River Falls doubled its goal total late in the third to take the game. The Falcons retook the two goal lead with just two minutes left and scored an empty net goal near the end of regulation for the 4-1 final score.
The Blugolds put up 33 shots to the Falcon 26. Ryan Mensing (So.-Langley, BC/Walnut Grove SS) had 22 saves. Both squads went 0-for-2 on power-play opportunities and both sides had only two penalties. It is the fewest penalties an Eau Claire opponent has had this season and ties for Eau Claire's season-low.
This was the third time the Falcons and Blugolds met this season, with River Falls winning the season series 2-1. The all-time series is also in River Falls' favor by a margin of 26-77-3.
Eau Claire's next action is next Friday in Duluth, MN when the team faces St. Scholastica.Eau Claire-River Falls Box Score
