Men's Hockey Rally Comes Up Short In Loss To Gustavus

ST. PETER, MN - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team scored three goals in the third period tonight, but still fell to Gustavus Adolphus College (MN) by a score of 4-3 at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.
The loss drops the Blugolds record to 7-7-2 overall and it snaps a two-game win streak. Gustavus improves to an overall record of 7-6-1 and are currently on a five-game winning streak. Gustavus owns the advantage in the all-time series with a 9-5 record.
The Gusties scored first with a power play goal by Mike Hosfield with 7:40 remaining in the first period. The score remained 1-0 into the first intermission. The Blugolds out-shot Gustavus 8-7 in the first period.
The Gusties extended their lead halfway through the second period when Sami Idris scored an even-handed goal with 8:32 to play in the period. After a hooking penalty by the Blugolds, Gustavus scored again as Steven Jensen scored on the power play with 4:23 remaining in the second period to make the score 3-0 Gustavus. Gustavus out-shot Eau Claire in the second period 11-4.
The Blugolds got on the scoreboard just two minutes into the third period as Andrew Johnson (So.-Andover, MN/Anoka) scored to make the score 3-1. Jesse Vesel (So.-Hibbing, MN) assisted on the goal. The Blugolds cut the Gusties lead to one with 11 minutes to play in the game when Dave Coleman (Whitby, ONT/Leo J. Austin) scored to make the score 3-2. Steve Dus (Sr.-Onalaska, WI) and Sean Garrity (Jr.-North St. Paul, MN) had the assists on the goal.
However, Mike Hosfield extended the Gustavus lead back to 4-2 when he scored a short-handed goal with 7:38 remaining in the game. Sean Garrity scored just one minute later to make the score 4-3 Gustavus. Greg Petersen (So.-Maple Grove, MN/Totino-Grace) and Kyle Garner (Sr.-Sun Prairie, WI) had the assists. The Blugolds would not be able to tie it the rest of the way as Gustavus hung on to win 4-3.
Both teams ended up with 25 shots apiece. The Blugolds were 0-for-7 on the power play and Gustavus went 2-for-8. The Blugolds ended with nine penalties, while Gustavus finished with eight penalties.
Blugolds goaltender Ryan Mensing (So.-Langley, BC/Walnut Grove SS) picked up the loss as he saved 21-of-25 shots. Kevin Johnson picked up the win in net for Gustavus as he saved 22 shots.
The Blugolds will travel to face St. Olaf College (MN) tomorrow afternoon. The puck is scheduled to drop at 2:30 p.m.
