The Blugolds are 4-1 this season and are off to their best start since the 2003-04 season when they also started 4-1. The Pipers fall to 1-3 this season. The Blugolds are now 8-4-1 all-time against Hamline. Two and a half minutes into the contest, the Blugolds Ben Hendrick (So.-Andover, MN/Anoka) scored on a powerplay, his fourth goal of the season, to make the score 1-0. Jesse Vesel (So.-Hibbing, MN) had the assist. A little over two minutes later, Hamline tied the game 1-1 on a Joe Long powerplay goal. Lee Joos then gave Hamline a 2-1 lead on a powerplay goal with 9:09 to play in the first period. The Pipers still were not done scoring in the first period as Cory Krogen scored an even-handed goal with just under two minutes to play in the period to make the score 3-1. Then with 13 seconds left in the first period Dustin Fulton scored to give the Pipers a 4-1 lead at the first intermission. The Pipers had four goals on just six shots in that first period. The Blugolds could only get one of their 19 shots past Hamline goalie Matt Wanvig in the first. With 14:10 to play in the second period, the Blugolds Joe Krahn (Fr.-Greenfield, WI/Martin Luther) scored his first collegiate goal of the season to make the score 4-2 Hamline. At the nine minute mark, Sean Garrity (Jr.-North St. Paul, MN) scored his first goal of the night, a powerplay goal, to cut the Hamline lead to 4-3. Jesse Vesel had his second assist and Greg Petersen (So.-Maple Grove, MN/Totino-Grace) also assisted on the goal. Garrity wasn't done scoring as he tied the game with 6:21 to play in the second period. Jesse Vesel had his third assist on the goal. Both teams went to the second intermission with the score tied 4-4. The Blugolds had 19 shots in the period, while Hamline only had five shots. The game-winning goal came just 1:52 into the third period as Sean Garrity had the hat trick with his third goal of the game on a powerplay to give the Blugolds a 5-4 lead. Jesse Vesel had his fourth assist of the contest on the goal. The last time the Blugolds had a hat trick in a game was back on November 29, 2003 when both current Blugold Steve Dus (Sr.-Onalaska, WI) and Rob Ouimette had one against the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Eau Claire defense then held their ground the rest of the third period as the Blugolds hung on to win 5-4. The Blugolds out-shot the Pipers 50-15 in the game. The Blugolds were 3-for-11 on the powerplay, while Hamline was 2-for-6. Both teams combined for 17 penalties with Hamline having the majority of them with 11. Blugold goaltender Ryan Mensing (So.-Langley, BC/Walnut Grove SS) got the win for the Blugolds. Mensing only played the second period and the beginning of the third period as Tyler Brigl (Fr.-Eagan, MN) started the game and finished the game. Mensing had six saves and Brigl had five saves. Hamline goaltender Matt Wanvig had 46 saves in the loss. The Blugolds play the final game of their home stand next Friday when they host UW-River Falls.
