EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire men's hockey team needed six goals tonight on its way to defeating St. Mary's University (MN) 6-5 at the Hobbs Ice Center.

The win improves the Blugolds record to 2-1-0. The two wins match the team's total from all of last season. The Cardinals drop to a record of 0-2-0. The Blugolds are now 4-11-2 all-time against St. Mary's and have won two of the last three meetings.

Eau Claire scored first for the third consecutive game when Greg Petersen (So.-Maple Grove, MN/Totino-Grace) scored on a powerplay at 15:23 in the first period. Sean Garrity (Jr.-North St. Paul, MN) and Jesse Vesel (So.-Hibbing, MN) assisted on the goal. Halfway through the first period the Blugolds extended their lead to 2-0 when Garrity put one in the net for the second powerplay goal of the game. Petersen had the assist.

St. Mary's got on the scoreboard with 5:42 to play in the first period when Joe Mayer scored to make the score 2-1. That would be the score at the first intermission. Both teams fired ten shots in the first period.

The Cardinals tied it up in the second period when Jesse Polk scored a powerplay goal at 14:08 to make the score 2-2. Just under three minutes later, the Blugolds regained the lead when Sean Garrity scored his second powerplay goal of the contest to make the score 3-2 Eau Claire. Greg Petersen had his second assist and Ben Hendrick (So.-Andover, MN/Anoka) also assisted on the goal.

St. Mary's then answered as Jesse Polk scored his second powerplay goal of the game with 4:42 to play in the second period to tie the score 3-3. Eau Claire came back 54 seconds later on an Andrew Johnson (So.-Andover, MN/Anoka) goal as the score was 4-3 Blugolds at the second intermission. Once again both teams tied with nine shots on goal in the period.

Seven minutes into the third period, Ben Hendrick put the Blugolds up 5-3 with his third goal of the year. With 11:09 to play in the game the Cardinals cut the lead to one when David Gross scored on a powerplay goal that made the score 5-4 Eau Claire.

St. Mary's then tied it up 30 seconds later on a Matt Staehely goal to make the score 5-5. The Blugolds took the lead for good with 6:43 to play as Ben Hendrick scored his second goal of the night, this time on a powerplay, to make the score 6-5. Steve Dus (Sr.-Onalaska, WI) and Jesse Vesel had the assists. The Blugolds defense would hold it from there as they held off the Cardinals 6-5.

Eau Claire goaltender Ryan Mensing (So.-Langley, BC/Walnut Grove SS) finished with 28 saves on the night. Cardinal goaltender Nick Berra also finished with 28 saves. St. Mary's out-shot the Blugolds 34-33 in the contest. Seven of the 11 goals were powerplay goals as there were 28 penalties combined between the two teams.
