Dunbar Kills Platteville As Volleyball Squeezes By

PLATTEVILLE - Platteville native Jodi Dunbar (Sr. -Platteville) tied the school record for kills in a match with 29 as the UW-Eau Claire volleyball team narrowly defeated UW-Platteville 3-2.

The Blugolds are now 21-2 overall and 6-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pioneers are now 20-9 and 2-5 in the respective records. The Blugolds sit on top of the WIAC standings with UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh right behind them with 4-1 conference records.

The first game saw Eau Claire overcoming 11 errors in a 30-26 win. In the second game, the Blugolds rallied from a 27-19 deficit to win 32-30. The game had 21 kills on each side.

Platteville took games three and four with scores of 30-27 and 30-28. In the finale, the Blugolds held a .545 attack percentage and won 15-6. Eau Claire is now 2-1 in five game matches this season with the win against Claremont-M-S and the loss to Whitewater.

Dunbar was the star of the match, making 29 kills with an attack percentage of .349. It ties Marnie Blau's record of 29 set in 1995. Dunbar's 63 attacks are second all-time behind Michelle Arganbright's 75 set in 1994. The Pioneers also tied their school record for kills in a match. Dana Alf matched her own mark with 31 kills. The team totals went 80-74 in Eau Claire's favor.

Carly Freiborg (Sr.-Sacred Heart, MN/Renville County West) notched 59 assists in the game to help the team to a .259 attack percentage, as compared to Platteville's .224.

The team had nine aces and eight service errors while the Pioneers totaled numbers of four and six.

The defense came through for 77 digs, with Shanna Berger (Sr.-Baldwin/Baldwin-Woodville) collecting 26 of those. In all, the team had 13 blocks with Ashley Danielson (Sr.-Cadott) getting in on six of them. Platteville had 51 digs with 12.5 blocks.

The Blugolds are now 22-12 over Platteville all-time. The team is now riding a three-game winning streak.

The non-tournament WIAC matches conclude tomorrow for Eau Claire when they face UW-La Crosse at 2:00 p.m. in La Crosse.
