Strand enters his second season as the Blugolds head coach with 14 letterwinners from last year's squad. Six of those letterwinners are seniors. Center Brooks Lockwood (Sr.-Hudson, WI) and defenseman Kyle Garner (Sr.-Sun Prairie, WI) were All-WIAC honorable mention selections last year. Lockwood was second on the team with eight goals last season. Garner led the team with nine assists last year. The other returning seniors include left winger Dave Coleman (Whitby, ONT/Leo J. Austin), center Steve Dus (Sr.-Onalaska, WI), defenseman Kevin Knapp (Sr.-Blaine, MN/Spring Lake Park) and defenseman Dan Lohr (Sr.-Middleton, WI). Other returning centers from last year include Dan Fina (So.-Fontana, WI/Glenbard South, IL) and Mike Schneider (So.-Owatonna, MN). Fina had three goals last year, while Schneider had four goals. On the wings, key returnees include Ben Bosworth (So.-Hudson, WI) and Jeremiah Weber (Jr.-Hayward, WI). Bosworth had four goals last season. Weber won the Richard G. O?Brien Memorial Award for being a complete student-athlete and he was also named, along with Brooks Lockwood, to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) All-Academic Team. Defenseman Evan Byers (So.-Eagan, MN) is another key returnee. Byers was named the Wallace G. Akervik Memorial Rookie of the Year last season. Byers was fifth on the team with eight points last year. The only returning goalie from last season that saw playing time is Mike Gatzke (Jr.-White Bear Lake, MN/Hill-Murray). Gatzke played in two games last season, starting one, and had 42 saves. Other goalies include Ryan Mensing (So.-Langley, BC/Walnut Grove SS) and Tyler Brigl (Fr.-Eagan, MN). Brigl is one of six freshmen on this year's team. The other freshmen are right winger Joe Krahn (Fr.-Greenfield, WI/Martin Luther), left winger Tyler Weigel (Fr.-Madison, WI/Oregon), center Nate Smith (Fr.-Clayton, WI), defenseman Nicholas Kuqali (Fr.-Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon), and defenseman Tyler Trudell (Fr.-Waukesha, WI/South). The Blugolds will look to improve from last season and be a contender in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and the NCHA. - JR - |
