Late Goal Gives Soccer The Win Over Loras

DUBUQUE, IA - Amy Smith (So. -Bloomington, MN/Jefferson) scored in the 90th minute to give the seventh-ranked UW-Eau Claire soccer team a 2-1 victory over Loras College (IA) today at the Rock Bowl.
The Blugolds have won five straight and have an overall record of 15-1-0. Loras falls to 7-6-1 overall. The Blugolds are now 2-1 all-time against Loras and have won the last two matches. The 15 wins for the Blugolds matches the season output from last year is tied for the fourth-most in team history. The Blugolds have four more matches left in the regular season.
For the second consecutive match, the Blugolds fell behind as Loras' Mirjana Biljan scored in the 32nd minute to give the Duhawks a 1-0 lead. The Duhawks kept the pressure on in the first half out-shooting the Blugolds 9-6. Blugold goalkeeper Liz Weirick (So.-Kenosha, WI/Tremper) had three saves in the first half.
The Blugolds squared the match at 1-1 when Emily Meisinger (Sr.-Green Bay, WI/Notre Dame Academy) scored her sixth goal of the season at 59:11. Maria Iaizzo (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) assisted on the goal.
The match stayed tied until the 90th minute when Amy Smith scored off of a corner kick from her sister Allison Smith (So.-Bloomington, MN/Jefferson) with 12 seconds left in regulation to lift the Blugolds to a 2-1 victory. It was Amy Smith's ninth goal of the season.
The Blugolds out-shot the Duhawks 13-7 in the second half and second half goalkeeper Allie Rivard (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) had three saves in the win
Next the Blugolds will face Macalester College (MN) on Wednesday. The match begins at 7:30 p.m.
