EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team will put weeks of practice to work this Friday and Saturday when the Blugolds kick off their season as they host the UW-Eau Claire Labor Day Tournament at the McPhee Physical Education Center.
The six team tournament begins Friday at 4:00 p.m. with the Blugolds battling St. Catherine on court one and Augsburg dueling with UM-Morris on court two. At 6:00 p.m. Lawrence will take on St. Catherine on court one while Augsburg and Hamline hammer it out on court two. Eau Claire is back in action at 8:00 p.m. on court one, where they will face Hamline, while Lawrence and UM-Morris play on court two.
Another full slate of games is set for Saturday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with Hamline vs. Lawrence and Augsburg vs. St. Catherine. The Blugolds will battle the Auggies at 11:00 a.m. on court one while UM-Morris and St. Catherine play on court two. Eau Claire will face Lawrence in the tournament finale on court one at 1:00 p.m. while UM-Morris and Hamline wrap things up on court two.
The Blugolds have enjoyed tremendous success against all of the teams making their way to Eau Claire for this weekend's event, going a combined 58-13 against the five schools. Eau Claire has an all-time record of 20-3 against Augsburg, including a 3-1 drumming of the Auggies last year in Minnesota.
Against the Pipers of Hamline, the Blugolds are 15-3 all-time and also handed Hamline a 3-1 loss last season. Eau Claire won the first two games 30-28 and 30-14 before dropping the third game of the match. The Blugolds battled back with a decisive 30-20 victory in game four to steer clear of a fifth game.
Eau Claire has less of a history against the Lawrence Vikings, as the two teams have only met on two occasions. The Blugolds are a perfect 2-0 against the Vikings, winning six of seven games between the two clubs. Eau Claire has not faced Lawrence since September of 2002, a 3-1 victory.
The Blugolds bring a very impressive record against St. Catherine's, having not dropped a match since 1984. Eau Claire is 11-3 all-time against the Wildcats, but all 11 victories have come consecutively. The Blugolds topped St. Catherine's 3-0 last year, when the two teams met for the first time since 1997.
Eau Claire also defeated UM-Morris last season, winning 3-1 for the third consecutive game. The Blugolds are 10-4 lifetime against the Cougars and are 9-1 since 1984.
