With three players among the top five scorers, Gustavus Adolphus holds a 17-stroke lead at the halfway point of the UW-Eau Claire Fall Invitation women's golf tournament, shooting a 311 on the first day of competition Saturday on the Mill Run Golf Course.

Seven teams are within nine strokes of each other from second through eighth places in the 20-team field.

Competition in the 36-hole tournament will conclude Sunday on the Wild Ridge Golf Course with tee times between 8 and 10 a.m.

Eau Claire's Meghan Sobotta, Wartburg's Kate Thompson and Gustavus' Kimbra Kosak share medalist honors after one round with four-over 76s on the 5,910-yard Mill Run layout. Gustavus' Rachel Robert and Kali Griggs hold down the fourth and fifth spots with 77 and 78, respectively. UW-Oshkosh's Jennifer Young and Central College's Brooke Bachelder are one more stroke back at 79 with four individuals carding 80s.

The host Blugolds are in second place with a 328, a single stroke ahead of Wartburg College and two ahead of St. Thomas. Gustavus finished second, Wartburg fourth and Eau Claire fifth in last spring's NCAA Division III national championship meet.

Sobotta (Jr.-Arcadia) went out with a 37 and came back with a 39 to lead Eau Claire. Teammate Jesse Thompson (Stevens Point/SPASH) is tied for 15th with an 82 while freshman Kate Borman (Kenosha/Bradford) is tied for 20th with an 83. Rounding out the Blugold squad were Kim Huber (Jr.-White Bear Lake, MN) with an 87 and Torie Ives (Fr.-Osseo/Osseo-Fairchild) with a 91.

The Blugolds also had three squad members competing as individuals. Freshman Bri Obermueller (River Falls) shot an 89, sophomore Becky Washleski (Cambridge, MN/Cambridge-Isanti) shot a 91 and junior Sarah Hansen (Bangor) shot a 93.
