LISLE, Ill. - Two UW-Eau Claire athletes advanced to the finals in their respective events with outstanding efforts Friday in the trials at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships being hosted here by Benedictine University.

Freshman Liz Kooistra (Lakeville, MN) broke the school 400-meter record for the third time this season to advance to Saturday's finals in that event while junior Liz Faller (Marinette) recorded the fourth fastest preliminary time to reach the finals of the 100-meter hurdles.

Kooistra has lowered the school standard in the 400 by almost a full second this season. She broke the previous mark of 57.22 set by Breanna McMullen on May 10, 2002 with a 56.71 clocking on April 21 at the Phil Esten meet in La Crosse. In the conference meet three weeks ago, she trimmed the record to 56.53 with a third-place finish. Running in the second of three heats Friday, she was clocked in 56.29 for the eighth fastest time out of 21 entrants in that event.

Faller, the WIAC champ in the 100-meter hurdles, finished third in her heat which included a stadium record 14.15 clocking by two-time defending national champion Sheana Grigsby of Carthage. Faller's time was 14.56 which compares to her best effort of 14.41 and the school record of 14.27 set by Jen Stafslien at last year's national meet.

With no one competing in any finals Friday, the Blugolds dropped out of the team lead and now stand fifth with 15 points. Conference rival UW-Oshkosh has taken over the team lead with 28 points followed by Williams College with 21, Calvin College with 18 and Bates College with 16.

Besides finals for Faller and Kooistra Saturday, senior Erin Kokta (Brookfield/East) will compete in the triple jump.

The only Blugold men's competitor at the national meet, freshman Matt Crosby (Glenwood City) finished his competition in the decathlon Friday. A third-place finisher in the conference meet, Crosby placed 12th out of 17 competitors with 6,016 points. His best two events were the shot put where he finished fifth and the 110-meter hurdles where he was seventh. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Matt Roberson won the event with 7,188 points.
